Member Achievement: Whitney Cox

In his review of Archana Venkatesan’s,”powerful [and] lovely” new translation, Whitney Cox, Associate Professor in South Asian Languages and Civilizations, discusses the long legacy of COSAS member A. K. Ramanujan on the study of classical South Indian literature, and the different priorities and pressures facing scholarly versus literary translation.  He also notes the significant fact that the best translators of classical and medieval Tamil are now women, while introducing the reader to the world of the ninth century Tamil country, and the place of the Nammāḻvār’s monumental masterpiece Tiruvāymoḻi within later religious and cultural history.
