Associate Instructional Professor in Comparative Literature

Nisha Kommattam works at the intersection of South Asian literatures and Gender & Sexuality studies, with a focus on Southern India (Malayalam Literature, Kerala Studies). Her current book manuscript examines tropes of queerness and trauma in contemporary Malayalam literature and popular culture. Recent publications include Are They Women? A Novel Concerning the Third Sex by Aimée Duc; with Margaret S. Breen, (translation from German, with critical introduction); Broadview Press (2020); a book which highlights the transnational entanglements of a pioneering lesbian German writer in fin-de-siècle Europe, whose writings ultimately took her to colonial India. She is also interested in literatures of migration, inter-Asia comparisons, Animal Studies as well as modern and contemporary Japan.
