Chicago undergraduates are introduced to South Asia through a course specifically designed for them, a two-quarter sequence on South Asia Civilizations, which is offered both on campus and through the undergraduate abroad program in India. In addition, all two-hundred to four-hundred level courses are routinely available to advanced undergraduates.
The Department of South Asian Languages and Civilizations offers a major leading to a B.A. and a minor. The Department is a member of the Humanities Division, but the social sciences are integrated into the SALC program through the Civilization sequence, and courses in the social sciences and religious studies are usually included in a student’s program of study. Students pursue a course of study that integrates the Civilizations sequence with specific requirements in language and area studies courses. Students who wish to pursue a minor in South Asian Studies typically take a selection of five language or area studies courses of their choice, with no specific amount of language study required. Details regarding the degree requirements can be found on the SALC departmental website http://salc.uchicago.edu/underdegree.html.
