The Committee on Southern Asian Studies (COSAS) is pleased to present a screening of Inshallah, Football with director Ashwin Kumar. The event will be held in The International House, Assembly Hall at 6:00 P.M. on Wednesday, October 19. Refreshments will be served provided prior to the event.

Ashwin Kumar has been involved with 5 feature length films, either as director or producer. His second film, Little Terrorist (2004) was nomiated for an Academy Award for "Live Action Short Film". Several of Ashwin's films, including both Little Terrorist and Inshallah, Football, focus on the tensions in Kashmir, putting a human face to the conflict which has claimed lives and led to numerous wars between India and Pakistan.

Inshallah, Football follows the same path blazed by Ashwin's previous films. The film tells the story of a young Indian boy who is enthralled by football, or soccer in the American vernacular. The boy applies for a visa in order to travel abroad in order to play football, but his father's past creates obstacles in his quest to become an international football star. Inshallah, Football won an award in Dubai's International Film Festival and was recfently selected to screen at Chicago's International Film Festival in early October. Despite its reception abroad, Inshallah Football has been banned by the Indian Censor Board, preventing it from reaching a wide audience within the subcontinent through traditional channels.

Ashwin Kumar was born in Kolkata and educated at St. Stephen's College, Delhi. He attended Goldsmith's College in London where he received a bachelors degree in media and communications, and briefly attended the London Film School.

Persons needing assistance in order to attend are asked to contact Michael Burt at 773-702-8635 at least 24 hours in advance.
