Funding Opportunities for South and South East Asian Studies

COSAS Grants

  1. COSAS Student Conference Travel Grants

University of Chicago graduate students who deliver paper on subjects related to South or Southeast Asia at a recognized conference may be eligible to receive reimbursement for travel-related expenses for attending the conference up to a limit of $500 per year (2007-08 funding levels).

Funds are limited to a maximum established by the annual budget. We recommend that students have their travel reimbursement pre-approved by emailing the COSAS office at tbedi@uchicago.edu or by submitting the attached form in person or by fax to Kelly Hall 104; fax 773-702-1309.

Students must sign and submit a University of Chicago travel voucher request along with all travel receipts and hotel bills with all details of charges included. Conference registration fees generally may be included in the reimbursement, when requested with receipts.

  2. COSAS Student Archival and Research Grants (“Small Grants”)

COSAS has set aside a modest fund to support students’ acquisition of materials generally held in archives and libraries. These funds are meant to cover reimbursement fees for photocopying, acquiring microfilm and microfiche documents, and similar types of requests.

Receipts are required and reimbursements are limited to $250 per person per year. Due to limitations on the size of this budget, we recommend that students have their reimbursements pre-approved when possible to assure that the request can be honored.

Please email the COSAS office at bjashby@uchicago.edu or call 773-702-8637 if you have questions regarding this grant or would like to have your request pre-approved.

Students are encouraged to view the materials collected as a source to share with colleagues and donate them, after the initial reference use, to the Southern Asian Collection at the University of Chicago.

  3. COSAS Special Projects Grants

COSAS students may request funding for one-time special projects. In recent years, these have included support for the now annual South Asia Graduate Student Conference, as well as arts programs, workshops and other group projects.

Project requests must be developed in the form of a brief proposal (generally one-page) and include a budget. Proposals should be submitted to the COSAS office and will be considered for approval by the committee at a quarterly meeting.

The committee welcomes creative and thoughtful projects, but recognizes that the process for developing a proposal can be time-consuming and confusing. We suggest that students meet with the COSAS Associate Director to discuss plans for special projects and proposals. Please call 773-702-8637 or write to tbedi@uchicago.edu.

COSAS sets its budget in spring. We recommend that students submit proposals for major projects during the first half of the spring quarter of the year preceding the proposed event.

Requests for less expensive projects may be considered during the course of the year, but can only be approved if sufficient funds are available to cover the project.

  4. COSAS Last Quarter Tuition Only Grants

COSAS students may request tuition only grants to cover their tuition for the quarter in which they graduate. These grants do not involve any stipend, and are not available to students who are unable to show evidence of graduation for the quarter in which funding is sought. All funding is available pending budget approval and all decisions regarding these awards must also be finally approved by the applicant’s Dean of Students.

We suggest that you contact the COSAS Associate Director who will advise you on eligibility or write to us at tbedi@uchicago.edu.
